Lisbon’s most well-known chef shares his favorite cosmopolitan hotspots to eat and drink.

Chef José Avillez is among Portugal’s most well-known illustrious Michelin chefs. He has five restaurants in Lisbon and a sixth he just opened named Bairro do Avillez. Below he shares his top 5 Lisbon restaurants and bars to eat and drink in the most cosmopolitan Portuguese city.
1. Bairro do Avillez
R. Nova da Trindade 18, 1200-466 Lisboa, Portugal (map, website)
Bairro do Avillez is my most recent project. Starting in June 2016, it will consist of several restaurant concepts that will open. It will be a place filled with delicious details to reflect upon the Lisbon experience that is typical and cosmopolitan. Here, you will be able to lunch, dine, snack or have a drink at any time, from noon to midnight, seven days a week.
2. Mini Bar
R. António Maria Cardoso 58, Lisboa, Portugal (map, website)
Mini Bar is a highly entertaining restaurant/bar. It opens only for dinner, seven days a week. It serves small and varied gastronomic experiences full of flavour, wonder and fun that can be savoured in the tables reserved for dinner or in the bar area. On Fridays and Saturdays there’s always a DJ performing.

3. Taberna da Rua das Flores
Rua das Flores 103, 1200-194 Lisboa, Portugal (map, website)
Taberna da Rua das Flores is a small and informal restaurant serves traditional Portuguese food recreating the spirit of an old Portuguese tavern. The menu is written in a chalk board because it changes very frequently.

4. Café Lisboa (at São Carlos National Theatre)
Largo de São Carlos 23, Portugal (map, website)
While Café Lisboa evokes the charm of traditional cafés, it also transports us to today’s Lisbon. Café Lisboa has two areas: a room inside the Theatre, which captures the charm of this extraordinary late 18th century building, and a wonderfully inviting terrace. The menu consists of very good Portuguese comfort food. Don’t miss “Brás style cod” – flaked cod mixed with onion, shoestring fries, eggs, minced parsley and olives.

5. Cinco Lounge
R. Ruben A. Leitão 17A, 1200-392 Lisboa, Portugal (map, website)
Cinco Lounge is a bar solely devoted to cocktails. The atmosphere is really relaxed and fun. The drinks menu changes frequently, so you can always find something new.
