Hustai National Park Is Where To Observe Mongolian Wild Horses

Home to the rare breed of Mongolian wild horses.

Hustai National Park is where the Mongolian Government protects an extremely rare breed of Takhi horses, or Prezewalski horses. Four wheel drive off-road vans (UAZ-452) are best suited to navigate deep ruts on the park’s dirt roads, as well as helping to protect the wildlife and fragile grasslands. Visitors are required to stay at least 300 meters away from the animals. 

Mongolian wild horses are not only completely wild but also unfortunately endangered. As true natives to Central Asian steppes, they are genetically more stocky, with shorter legs and smaller in size while possessing 66 chromosomes compared to 64 that belong to domestic horses.

Mongolian wild horses is the only horse species that has never been domesticated, making them as true to “wild” than any other horse species. 

The entrance fee to Hustai National Park is 35,000 tugrik (USD $10) per person, making it one of the most expensive attractions in Mongolia, but it funds the park to protect the horses’ natural environment.
