Verona’s famous hotel, the “Il Sogno di Giulietta,” is the ultimate destination spot for this year’s season of love. Translated as “Juliet’s Dream,” this enchanting boutique hotel is renowned for two reasons: its fabulous five star accommodations and its location. The hotel can be found in the same courtyard as the “Casa di Giulietta,” a renaissance house that is the alleged inspiration for Shakespeare’s balcony scene in Act II, Scene II of Romeo and Juliet. More recently, the hotel has also hosted actors from the movie Letters to Juliet, allowing them to film in the courtyard.

A huge perk for guests of the hotel Il Sogno is the VIP access to the balcony courtyard after hours. With the gates locked up, couples can enjoy intimate moments together in the most iconic setting of romance literature. For the hopeless romantic, there really is no other way to visit the Juliet’s courtyard – only in solitude under the cloak of night can one truly envision the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet as it should be.

While you are there, take advantage of the opportunity to indulge in the cult of Juliet. There are several “traditions” that go along with a visit to Juliet’s balcony.

When you first walk through the arched rod iron gates you will pass through a tunnel completely covered in pen markings. Ask the staff for some permanent markers and you can ink your vows as lovers on the ever-evolving wall of graffiti art. The concierge will be happy to take a couple pictures for you as well.

Another tradition is to touch the breast of the bronze statue of Juliet; it is rumored to bring luck to all who are looking for true love.

Most importantly, you must write a letter to Juliet. Feel free to ask her anything and leave your letter in her mailbox with a return address. She might write you back!

While the VIP access to Juliet’s courtyard is a huge perk, the amenities at the Il Sogno are a large part of what makes the hotel worth the splurge. Each room is complete with lush décor and furnishings, a comfortable mattress, modern bathrooms, free Internet access, and an attentive staff. In addition, all guests are provided with a pair of slippers and a fluffy white robe; it is the perfect ensemble for the complimentary breakfast in bed that is delivered each morning.

Be sure to book your next stay during February 14th-17th. These are the dates of Verona’s annual Saint Valentine’s Festival, “Verona in Love,” and the Il Sogno di Giulietta is offering some special room packages for the event. Verona goes all out for the celebration of Valentine’s Day. You will feel the love in the air as red hearts hang from street lamps, the Lamberti tower glows with a reddish hue, and the city rolls out a massive red heart shaped carpet in the middle of the main square, Piazza dei Signori. During the festival, the piazza is the location of the annual “minute long kiss” as well as a series of concerts.

Verona is truly the ultimate lovers’ getaway, an ideal place to make lasting memories with the one you love. It is a city wrapped in historic romanticism with enough personality to be the site of your very own modern romance.
