To this day, I still love to go around Copenhagen and see the city.
Photographer and Denmark native Lucas Koblua takes us around the city of Copenhagen for the day and shows us where you can find the best views to capture this beautiful city.
I have lived in Copenhagen for more than 20 years. I grew up in the countryside of Denmark, but was very eager to move to Copenhagen after high school. I was drawn by the city life, being surrounded by many people, and getting the chance to know our capital. To this day, I still love to go around Copenhagen and see the city.
This morning, my trip begins at Nørreport, which is the busiest station in Copenhagen. There are many large areas for parking your bike around the station.
It is very popular to have a bike here, so when you arrive on the train in the morning, you automatically have your bike which grants easy access to getting around the city.
Very central and close to Nørreport is Kings Garden (Kongens Have), which is a great park with the beautiful and magical castle Rosenborg within. As soon as Spring begins many people gather there for a picnic in the park. I love to go there with my camera and see if I can shoot the castle at a great angle, or some of the great tree corridors in different light. Here I got the castle in early morning.
Not far from Kings Garden is Nyhavn. Nyhavn is famous for its colored facades along the canal. Day and night, all year round, you can get really awesome pictures here. As a photographer, my favorite time to shoot Nyhavn is in the early morning with the sunrise.
Or, if you are lucky to get there when we have no wind. Denmark is really windy, so no wind is very rare here.
If you continue to the end of Nyhavn, there is a bridge for bikes and pedestrians leading to Christianshavn on the other side of the harbor. Christianshavn is a very charming and cozy area, with small streets and many canals. You can find so many nice spots that are great to explore with your camera. This house is very well photographed. I went into it wanting to shoot with a cyclist there in front of the house. Within 5 minutes I had several pictures where a cyclist was in the frame, since there are many cyclists in Copenhagen.
Rosenborg, Nyhavn and Christianshavn are all founded in the 17th century. So this little trip through Copenhagen was also a historical one. If you walk from Nørreport to Christianshavn you will come by so many fantastic spots, and the walk, including taking the pictures, doesn’t take more than a few hours.
If you are in Copenhagen in the autumn, Kastellet dressed in the autumn colors is a must see.
In the cherry blossom season in the beginning of April, Bispebjerg cemetery is a fantastic spot, but you have to be there early, as the Sakura trees are visited by 150,000 people over the few weeks the season lasts. But it is really beautiful to see. Both places can be reached by bike from Copenhagen center, and are great places if you like a bit of nature amidst the city.
