Home to ancient ruins of pre-Hispanic civilizations (Tierradentro and San Agustín); perfectly preserved colonial cities (Cartagena); magnificent topography and diverse terrain for multi-day jungle treks (Amazon and Ciudad Perdida), warm climate for whitewater rafting, high-altitude mountain climbing, pristine waters for world-class scuba diving, and every conceivable outdoor excursion you can think of; an impressive array of savory exotic fruits; the capital (and birthplace) of salsa dancing (Cali); and, of course, the world’s most famous coffee region (Zona Cafetera)—it’s little wonder why Colombia remains a premier getaway for travelers the world over.

Steeped in architectural wonder, colonial mystique and rich culture, and not to mention more museums and art galleries than anywhere in the country, a visit to Bogotá (Colombia’s capital city) will surely take your breath away—and it’s not just the high altitude (2,600m). Outdoor adventurists will love to trek, explore and marvel at crimson-hued sunsets, while napping on beachside hammocks at Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. Stunning in person, as well as towering in height, the palmas de cera (wax palms) in Valle de Cocora are the tallest in the world, and are exclusive to the region (don’t forget to stop by Reserva Natural Acaime to see the hummingbirds!). And no visit to Colombia can be complete without a stop at the famous coffee triangle (Zona Cafetera, Salento and Armenia) for a cup of world-class coffee (and while there don’t forget to try your hand at Tejo, Colombia’s national game!).
