Hong Kong has an endless array of trendy restaurants, stores, and bars. But it can be tough to break past the popular spots to find some hidden gems along the quieter side alleys. I came across Starstreet in Wanchai and a lucky find while heading out to look for design and lifestyle magazine: Monocle’s Hong Kong outpost, which is a mix of a small offices and stores.

As I turned off of busy Queens Road in the Wan Chai district, up onto the steep rise of St. Francis Street, I knew that I had discovered something good. My first stop was Monocle, a store that sells unique products such as travel organizers made by Japanese stationary designer Mark’s, clothing by Danish company Inoue Brother’s, and back issues of the beautifully-printed magazine.

Wandering around surrounding streets, memorably named Moon, Star, and Sun, I also stopped inside Kapok. Kapok has two locations in the area, offering a full range of clothing, accessories, and featured items: art books and artisanal chocolate, all of which are produced in small quantities all over the world. My purchase of the day was greeting cards featuring images taken by local Hong Kong photographers showing an interesting perspective of the grungy facades of Hong Kong’s numerous public housing concrete skyscrapers.

My day finished up with delicious food at TED’s Lookout. This intimate restaurant has a wide array of cocktails and delicious hearty American dishes. Expect gourmet sliders and prawn po’ boys. The pastas of the week are definitely a good reason to keep coming back for more and some of the past dishes include squid ink linguini and clam and bacon carbonara.
