1. Bock Bisztró – Best Homemade Dishes

$$$$ Erzsébet körút 43-49, Budapest, Hungary (Pest location) (mapwebsite)
1125 Budapest Szarvas Gábor út 8, Budapest, Hungary (Buda location) (map)

With two locations (one in Buda, one in Pest), Bock Bistro is our absolute favorite in the city. Their homemade salami, cottage cheese and cured ham are so good, like stepping into a Hungarian grandmother’s kitchen. Goulash comes with real class, full of tradition and sophistication. Service is top-knotch and prices are reasonable. Get a glass of “Villanyi Kekfrankos Reserve” – an intense color oscillating between ruby and purple, an enduring explicit nose of raspberry and blackberry. We highly recommend Bock for a casual lunch break or a nice dinner to end a lovely day in the city!

2. Klassz – Best Hidden Gem

$$$$ Andrassy ut. 41., Budapest, Hungary ‎ (mapwebsite)

Wonderful service and high quality food make Klassz a true hidden gem. After a day of walking in Budapest, stumbling upon this restaurant will make you incredibly happy. It’s traditional, with a relaxed and local ambiance in both indoor and outdoor seatings. Every dish is made to perfection, wonderfully designed. It has a cellar in the back where you can purchase wine close to wholesale prices. We had heard that few people called Klassz as “nothing special”, we prefer to take the time and enjoy all the little things that make this place truly special. Local, traditional, with a lot of heart!

3. M E N Z A – Étterem és kávézó – Best Trendy Staple

$$$$ 1061 Budapest, Liszt Ferenc tér 2, Hungary (mapwebsite)

With high-end speakers encompassing the entire restaurant (pretty impressive, you’ll see!) Menza is a staple choice. Like a good friend you can always rely on, the food is always delicious, service is consistently efficient. The menu offers a wide variety of traditional Hungarian dishes, from goulash all the way to grilled steak. The vibe is fresh and young. Sitting outdoors with some delish plates and a few fresh drinks will make local celebrity sightings at Menza all that more jazzed!

4. Spíler – Best Gastro-Bistro

$$$$ 1075 Budapest, Király-Straße, Hungary (mapwebsite)

If you combine ruin pub and gastro-bistro in one mash-up, what you’ll see is the extraordinary Spiler. With street art and funky decor, the food here is spectacular. Burgers and salads aren’t simply what they are, they’re done with the entirety of your palate in mind. We especially love their unique Hungarian craft beers and pizzas made with traditional bread called: kenyérlángos.

5. Le Bourbon – Best Class Act

$$$$ 1051 Budapest, Erzsébet tér 9-10, Hungary (mapwebsite)

Although we typically don’t prefer to include hotel restaurants on our lists, but this one is truly fantastic. A Michelin recommended option, Le Bourbon’s menu is international with a separate section specifically for Hungarian cuisine. The set menu is bang for the buck, take advantage! The wine selection is a lovely representation of local and international spectrums. If you’re looking for a night to dress up and celebrate the start or the end of your vacation, Le Bourbon would be your beautiful choice!
