#TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia: Ben Stiller’s Important Message About Famine


Actor Ben Stiller and Snapchat star Jérôme Jarre’s wants their good will to go viral by drawing attention to what one U.N. official refers to as “the worst humanitarian crisis” since World War II.

Jarre created the hashtag #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia to raise awareness toward the only airline flying to Somalia. In addition, he’s hoping that Turkish Airlines will send a plane with food and water to Somalia so NGOs on the ground can distribute goods to the people. Stiller saw the video and created one himself.

Somalia is suffering from a horrible drought and hunger crisis. It is one of four countries (Yemen, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria) dealing with extreme starvation, dehydration and famine. According to Reuters, out of 20 million people in the East African country, at least two people out of 10,000 are dying and more than 30% of children under the age of five are suffering from malnutrition.

Their efforts were clearly effective, since Turkish Airlines responded with a series of tweets:

Other social media influencers have also joined in on the action, including Facebook star Nuseir Yassin. The Harvard grad urged his 600,000 followers to promote the hashtag and explained a plan to get Turkish Airline to fly food to Somalia.
