5 Dead At Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting. Was Terrorism The Motive?



On Friday, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport went into complete chaos when a 26-year-old man, killed five people. Esteban Santiago will face 3 federal charges with the possibility of death penalty.

According to CNN, Santiago confessed to planning the attack. With a one-way Delta Air Lines ticket from Anchorage to Fort Lauderdale, where he loaded his Walther 9-millimeter pistol inside the airport bathroom and began shooting people he saw.

Santiago served 9 years in the National Guard which included a 10-month tour of Iraq where he earned a combat action badge. His aunt told CNN that after Iraq, his nephew seemed different, frequently referring to destruction and killing children along with having visions. His brother believes Friday’s shooting was caused by Santiago’s mental illness due to Iraq tour.

Since the motive is still too early in the investigation to determine, the FBI has not ruled out terrorism, according to George Piro, FBI’s special agent in charge in Miami.
