With the Olympic Games swiftly approaching, 230 American athletes have been making their way to Sochi. The schedules are set, the torch has made its global round, and the anticipation is at an all-time high. Since the games officially begin on February 6th, fans of winter sports are making their way to Russia this week. Every media report has been focusing on whether it’s safe to be in Sochi, so we do want every traveler to be cautious and be extra careful. But we’re reeling back to basics: what to pack?
Last winter, I traveled to Russia then compiled a list of things that I was stoked to have with me on the road. Key: double up everything and always moisturize!
Whether you’re an athlete, a media reporter covering the games, or a die-hard Shaune White fan, you’re gonna want to know what are the A-Z essentials to throw in your luggages. What I have here is real simple, just an easy list of 12 awesome must-haves you will be thankful for having in the freezing Russian cold.
1. Faux fur hats
Nothing else will keep your head warmer than these furry accessories. Bonus plus, every local will be wearing them too! No other hat wear will make you gel in with the scene better.
2. Uniqlo feather down jacket
Use this as an extra sweater, not as the only jacket you wear. Use Uniqlo’s famous jackets as an under layer will ensure you to be as toasty as your breakfast.
3. North Face down jacket
Can’t go wrong with a classic! Investing in a North Face jacket is better than spending money on travel insurance. It safely insures your Russia trip to be completely cozy and sporty.
4. Cashmere sweaters
These are It items in my suitcase for any winter travel, whether it’s in Europe to Russia. I highly recommend packing tons of cashmere sweaters, in every color!
The magic of goat neck hair! The stock that I have from India has kept me warm throughout the world. You can find pashminas in most department store. Although pricey, they are absolutely worth every penny.
6. Double up the socks
I’ve learned that wearing one pair of socks simply isn’t enough. According to however many number of days you’ll be traveling, double that number for your suitcase.
7. Ugg boots
Yes! You’ll be thankful to have these around, even for guys! The grids on the bottom make walking in the snow do-able, and the interior fur is ideal for walks all day long.
Whether you prefer leather or wool, you’ve got to pack at least one pair of mittens. At certain point on the trip, you’ll probably want to wear both: wool inside the leather. Smart idea!
Your lips are going to be so happy! Without this item, they’re going to suffer from dryness and stay grotesquely chapped. One of my personal favorites is: Burt’s Bees.
10. Body butter, the intense kind
Notice I’m not mentioning body lotion but body butter? For Russia, you’ll need to intensely and aggressively moisturize your entire body. A favorite brand of mine is: Bliss Body Butter. Lather up!
11. Facial Sunscreen
Keep those wrinkles away and protect your skin at all times! Sunscreen isn’t just for summertime, it’s crucial to keep applying them during harsh winter as well, especially when you’ll be surrounded by mountains of snow.
12. Heat packs
These will be your best friends when everyone else’s hands are black and blue. Heat packs are THE essential accessories for your trip. Completely underrated but they’ll be your secret weapon
